Understanding Fe-Containing Intermetallic Compounds in Al Alloys: An Overview of Recent Advances from the LiME Research Hub

Control of Fe in Al alloys is a severe challenge for the full metal circulation to produce recycled with mechanical and physical performance as high primary alloys. The restriction content mainly due deterioration caused by large-scale Fe-containing intermetallic compounds (FIMCs) In this paper, recent knowledge gained regarding nucleation, formation, technical developments on microstructural control refinement FIMCs are overviewed. Specific characteristics multiple types presented two- three- dimensional (2D 3D) form. Phase relationships between different structures, such phase, binary eutectic, ternary formed at solidification stages studied. transformations or without intermediate phases during process examined alloys, mechanisms being clarified. Various approaches proposed validated. Significant has been achieved through inoculation TiB2 particles that had previously modified deliberately interfacial segregation desirable alloying elements, leading development novel “compositional templating” concept.
